Laura Cavicchio, Guest Minister
”Wisdom of the Divine Feminine”

"She is the Tree of Life to those who embrace Her, and those who unite with Her find happiness."  This service will lift up and celebrate ancient archetypes of the divine feminine from the Wisdom literature of the Bible.   What do we, as seekers of wisdom and the ways of right living have to learn from Her?

Laura, along with her husband Ron, has been a member of UUCR for 25 years.  Laura served UUCR for 7 years as Director of Religious Education, ending in 2000.  Following completion of her seminary studies at Andover Newton Theological School, Laura was ordained by this congregation -- her beloved ‘home’ church – in May, 2005. She is currently serving as the minister at First Parish in Lexington Unitarian Universalist.

“Accidental Intersections”
BRING A FRIEND SUNDAY
Rev. Tim Kutzmark

There are people who touch our lives for but a moment.  There are moments when someone appears, and their presence, fleeting as it may be, makes an impact.  Kate Braestrup captures these moments of grace quite beautifully in her touching memoir, Here If You Need Me, which has been selected the Fellowship Committee for this year’s all church read.  Today’s service will kick off the all church read, and explore the spiritual wisdom of presence when lives intersect for a brief but necessary moment of time.  Whether you intend to read the book or not, you’ll find a message in the service to soothe the soul.  We’ll also celebrate the Baby Dedication of Natalie Violet Ortins.

NOTE: Today is BRING A FRIEND SUNDAY, the perfect opportunity to invite a friend to join you in church and share the warmth and vitality of our church community.  Today’s service will be a perfect introduction to our Unitarian Universalist faith.

BRING A FRIEND SUNDAY IS APRIL 6 – DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that 85% of the people who ever visit a Unitarian Universalist Congregation do so because someone invited them to visit?  Don’t keep the warm and welcoming community here at the UU Church of Reading a secret.  Why not share our Unitarian Universalist faith with someone you know?

SUNDAY, APRIL 6TH is “BRING A FRIEND SUNDAY.”  Rev. Tim and the Worship Arts Ministry are creating a service perfect for first time visitors.  Please extend an invitation to someone you know.

TEA AND TOUR PLANNED FOR APRIL 13

Join Rev. Tim and Laraine Turner, Member Services Coordinator, after the service on Sunday, April 13th for a casual, comfortable chance to talk, ask questions, have a tour of the church campus, and learn a little bit more about Unitarian Universalism.  We’ll have snacks for adults and kids.  Nothing fancy.  Just friendly.  We hope to see you. (We'll meet at Tim's office after the service)

REV. TIM’S SERMONS AVAILABLE

Copies of all Rev. Tim's most current sermons are now available in the Atrium of Fellowship Hall, including "Comfort Food For the Soul"  and "Who Really Killed Jesus."  Sermons are also available on our website.

QUIET SPACE

As part of the Sanctuary construction our narthex sound system has been restored. We now have a quiet area that restless people and their children may sit in and listen to the service without feeling they are disturbing others. Sit on the comfortable chairs or crawl on the carpet, we are just happy to have you with us.

WHERE IS THE SUNDAY NEWS?

The office in concert with the Green Sanctuary Committee is now placing our weekly Sunday News in baskets or tables as you enter for worship.  Effective Sunday, March 30 the Sunday News will not be inserted in every order of service.  We are asking families to please help themselves to a copy of the Sunday News as they enter worship.   This small change will result in a paper reduction.

THERE’S MUSIC IN THE AIR!

The Music Committee, with guidance from Mark Bennett and Tim Kutzmark, is working to bring lots of music to UUCR, and not always when you expect it.  Have you noticed a change?  The mission of the Music Committee is to nurture and promote a variety of musical opportunities, in an environment that fosters the inherent, musical worth and dignity of every person.  We're hoping you've seen some musical changes over the last year.

  • We already have our ever-strong, ever-wonderful choir, under the direction of Mark Bennett; but we are changing dates that the choir sings so that a non-choir Sunday does not always line up with guest speakers, or a worship arts Sunday.
  • We now offer instrumental introits twice a month -- once by our talented organist George White, and the other time by a UUCR instrumentalist.
  • We have organized a jUUnior choir (offered twice a month after church) to children in grades 1-4.
  • How about that fabulous pot-luck dinner and sing-along organized by the Fellowship Committee on Feb. 23?
  • The IVY CHORD Coffee House brings a few evening events to the church!

A little of this, a little of that adds up to LOTS of music at UUCR!  The Music Committee is charged with serving as musical advocates for the entire congregation.  How can we better meet your needs?  We'd love to hear from you.

COME SING WITH US!

The jUUnior choir of UUCR would like to invite you to sing with us at church on Sunday morning, April 13.    The children involved with jUUnior choir have learned a round called "This Pretty Planet."  We're going to sing it on April 13, and we'd love others to join us.  Don't worry  -- the round is short, easy, and beautiful.  The jUUnior choir kids will teach it to you.  They already know it!  Join us for this wonderful, intergenerational, musical experience!   This piece is for everyone -- young and old, teens, too!   All non- jUUnior choir children (young children) must bring a singing adult.
If you wish to sing with us,  We will have two rehearsals that you must attend:

  • Sunday, March 30, 12:00 - 12:30, down in the Old Community  Hall
  • Sunday, April 13, before church, in the sanctuary

MINISTER'S MESSAGE

Reverend Tim KutzmarkDear Friends:

A few weeks ago, a friend, and a wonderful and devoted Unitarian Universalist, named Butch Redding died unexpectedly after suffering a stroke.  He was young, only fifty-six years old, with so much living left to do.  I first met Butch eighteen years ago when we were both members at Arlington Street Church in Boston.  Butch was a true creative soul, an artist, and a wizard with fabrics.  He had an astute eye for making everything, and everyone, more beautiful.  As a member at Arlington Street Church, Butch designed and sewed the celebratory banners for my ordination.  Butch designed the flowers and decorations when Jim and I had our wedding at Arlington Street Church.  Butch was a talented architect, and he designed aspects of many of his friend’s homes.  But Butch chose to work for most of his adult life for as an Administrator at Unitarian Universalist churches.  Butch once told a friend that he wanted to work directly in Unitarian Universalist churches because he wanted to be a part of this living and transforming faith that he loved, and that loved him back.

In 2006, Butch printed this following poem by Lynn Ungar in his church newsletter:

The cottonwoods are
Flinging themselves outward,
Filling the air with spiraling flurries,
Covering lawns in deepening drifts.
You could not call this generosity.
Like any being, they
Let loose what they have in order to survive.
In order that their lives might continue
In a new year's growth.
The more seeds they send out
On their lofted journeys
The greater the chance
For their kind to flourish

Then Butch added a postscript of his own:

May we let loose and fling ourselves into generous acts of abundant
creation.

May it be so!

See you on the path,
Tim

RACE:  CONTINUING THE EXPLORATION

NEW ADULT ENRICHMENT OFFERING CREATE A BEAUTIFUL BOOK OF PASSAGES FROM WORLD SCRIPTURES

Saturday April 19 – 9:00 am to 12 Noon in Loring
Sign-up deadline:  April 6
Facilitator:  Mandy Neff

This contemplative class grows out of two monastic traditions:  illumination and lectio divina.  The first part of the morning will be spent in the practice of lectio divina, or divine reading.  This is a practice of reading scriptures aloud, slowly, and giving oneself silent time to reflect or pray on the words, and then responding. We will select scriptures to focus on, and then take time to reflect on our chosen words.  Resources from different modern and ancient traditions will be available, including  Buddhist sutras, the Bible, the Koran, the Rig Veda, the Enuma Elish creation epic, and the Unitarian Universalist hymnal.    To respond, we will use illumination as a springboard.  Illumination is an elaborate art form decorated with gold, silver, brilliant colors and miniature pictures.  But don't feel intimidated!  We will use easy-to-master modern stamping and collage techniques to illustrate our scriptures, so your piece can be as simple or elaborate as you desire.  Each participant will take home a 5x7 book of art.  Materials fee: $10.  Mandy Neff is a former Director of Religious Education who has been leading workshops linking art and spirituality for over 10 years.  She is now a scrapbooking consultant and full-time mother of three.  Sign up on the registration sheet in the atrium.  Or call Rosemary in the church office at 781-944-0494 or email the Church Office Click to email.

PARTNER CHURCH NEWS

European EggsA beautiful e-card arrived last Illona Brossweek from Csilla Pataki, with best wishes to our congregation for a peaceful and happy Easter from her, her family, and our partner congregation in Transylvania (Romania). Csilla is the daughter of Alsójára congregation member Ilona Bross and is currently studying in Hungary.

Thank you to all who bought chocolate and coffee from the Partner Church Committee to benefit our church’s two “partner seminarians,” Marton Csecs and Julia Fülöp, who are studying for the Unitarian ministry in Transylvania. Your enthusiastic support raised $320.50 toward the stipends that the UUCR sends each year to Marton and Julia. (If you missed buying fair-trade coffee and chocolate in February, or would like more, not to worry! We’ll have more on May 4.)

Night at the Movies

Lorraine Dennis, President  “Manufactured Landscapes”

If you are interested in any of the following: art, the future of our planet, photography, economics, film, China’s industrial revolution, the environment, beauty, recycling;  in short, if you’re interested in our world, please join us to see the documentary “Manufactured Landscapes” on Friday April 11 here at the UUCR in Loring, Room 103.

An Extraordinary, Haunting, Beautiful, Insightful, Touching and Thought-Provoking Movie   -   Al Gore

An eloquent ecological warning that begs to be hung on the wall, studied, absorbed, and learned from.  “Manufactured Landscapes” is a mesmerizing work of visual oncology, a witness to a cancer that's visible only at a distance but entwined with the DNA of everything we buy and everywhere we shop.   -  Boston Globe

Manufactured Landscapes, using China as a canvas, is a reflection on the future of the planet, on the course of action we humans decide to take, and whether we are strong enough to do what is necessary to alter the path of destruction that seems to be our preferred choice so far ….  Eric Mahleb, Cinema Blogger

A landmark glimpse into China's modern-day industrial revolution becomes something more -- a profound, open-ended meditation on man's physical impact on his environment.  -  Variety

"… a highly unusual viewing experience that stimulates the senses and the conscience simultaneously."   -    Hollywood Reporter

Manufactured Landscapes bristles with profound images and ideas; its ability to provoke marks it as one of the most exciting films of the year.  -  Walter Chaw, FilmFreakCentral.net

SECOND OFFERING TO BENEFIT UUCR-MELROSE UU CHURCH VILLAGE BANK IN HAITI

SUNDAY APRIL 13

With a loan as small as $50 –$200, a person with an entrepreneurial spirit who’s living in poverty in a developing country can start or grow a small business—putting food on the family table, making it possible for children to go to school, eventually maybe even employing others in the community. “Microfinance” like this is challenging global poverty.

On Sunday, April 13, our congregation will have a Second Offering to found—with our partners, the Melrose UU Church—a village bank in Haiti. The bank, set up by FINCA (Foundation for International Community Assistance), will be run by and for about 20–30 entrepreneurs (probably women) in this desperately poor country. The goal is for each church to raise $2500 of the $5000 cost to found a bank. (Thanks to donations made at the Hunger Banquet, we have a start on this amount.) Once the bank is established, FINCA will send information and news about it.  Come on April 13 to hear Rev. Dorothy May Emerson speak about the transformative power of microlending, truly a way of helping people to help themselves, and then please donate to the village bank as you are willing and able.

LEARN MORE ABOUT UU URBAN MINISTRY AT ANNUAL MEETING:  THURSDAY MAY 15

Would you like to be a delegate from the UUCR to this year’s annual meeting of the UU Urban Ministry on Thursday, May 15? (The UUUM is a social justice ministry; its programs include the Roxbury Youth Programs, a domestic violence shelter, an Asian food pantry, and a re-entry and support program for men transitioning back into the community after prison.)

From the UUUM: “We are especially excited about this year’s meeting as we have a great deal to share with you. Over the past year, and with the extensive participation of our member congregations, we have made significant strides in our ongoing social justice efforts on behalf of the families and youth we serve. We are particularly excited about our Roxbury Youth Programs, which is participating in a Boston model program uniting schools, parents and after-school programs in a combined effort to address academic proficiency and character development. The program is based on a curriculum developed by urban education expect Dr. Jeff Howard, whom we are pleased to announce as this year’s Annual Meeting Keynote Speaker.”

The UUCR is eligible to send 3 delegates to the meeting. Typically the meeting runs a couple of hours around lunchtime, at First Church in Roxbury (John Eliot Square, 10 Putnam St.). If you’d like to go, contact Ann Mark Click to email (781-944-8769).
