Rev. Tim Kutzmark
”Shame, Scandal and Scam!”
Commitment Sunday Celebration

Two months ago, Rev. Tim was eating at a restaurant in New York City.  He looked out the window to see TV reporters, broadcast vans, lights, and cameras clogging the sidewalk.  Next door, something had happened, something not very nice.  How far will we go to get what we want?  Who and what will we sacrifice to make ends meet?  Also, today, back by popular demand, will be Rev. Tim’s special appearance as Dr Seuss’s “The Cat in the Hat,” with his Seuss-themed “Time For All Ages” story.  Today is Commitment Sunday, so please bring your completed pledge cards and “Active Voice” volunteer-sign-up-sheets to the service.  And everyone—young and old and in between—brand new faces and long-timers—is invited to join us for our celebratory luncheon after the service.  Just bring yourself and your appetite.  It’s our way of saying “thank you” for sharing your gifts with our church community.

Friday, March 21 2008 – Special Time:  7:30 PM

Rev. Tim Kutzmark
“Good Friday Service”

Jesus’ call to radical inclusiveness led the power structures of his day to crush him.  Now, he is remembered for beginning a revolution of the heart. Join Rev. Tim for this special ritual-based, interactive service of story, song and prayer.  This service is appropriate for young and old alike, and inclusive for people of any faith perspective.  Special music provided by Roald Wilson.

Sunday, March 23, 2008

Rev. Tim Kutzmark
Intergenerational Easter Sunday Service
TWO SERVICES:  9:00 AM & 10:45 AM

Join us as we celebrate the renewing power of resurrection in many forms.  Come for connection, come for community, come to claim the promise of this new day. Please note, there will be two services this morning: 9:00 AM and 10:45 AM.  The UUCR Adult Choir will sing at both services, offering “Gloria” by Antonio Vivaldi and “Hallelujah, Amen” by George Frederick Handel.  Rev. Tim will also offer an engaging “Time For All Ages” for young and old alike! There will be an Easter Egg hunt for the kids after each service.

REV. TIM ’S SERMONS AVAILABLE

Copies of all Rev. Tim's most current sermons are now available in the Atrium of Fellowship Hall and on the UUCR website, including "Comfort Food For the Soul"  and "Who Really Killed Jesus?

QUIET SPACE

As part of the Sanctuary construction our narthex sound system has been restored. We now have a quiet area that restless people and their children may sit in and listen to the service without feeling they are disturbing others. Sit on the comfortable chairs or crawl on the carpet, we are just happy to have you with us.

Commitment Sunday

This is just a friendly reminder from your 2008 Pledge Committee that this Sunday, March 16, is Commitment Sunday.  It is a UUCR tradition for members and friends to bring their pledge cards to the Sunday service and to stay for the Luncheon which follows immediately after the service.

We are looking for soup cooks, salad makers, and bakers for our Commitment Sunday luncheon, which will follow the service on Sunday, March 16.  Can you help?  What?  You are sick of cooking?  What's that? You still want to help? Perfect.  We also need prep people to set up, servers during the luncheon, and clean-up folks.  If you can help, please contact Denise Conry Click to email (978 664-6563 ). Thank you!

EASTER FLOWERS – DO NOT DELAY – CALL ROSEMARY TODAY!

Spring TulipsThe plant order is due into the green house this coming Friday, March 14.  Plant prices are extremely reasonable this year at $12 per plant!  Won't you consider helping to beautify our Sanctuary by choosing to purchase an Easter Lily, a Tulip, or a Daffodil plant(s)?  The flowers will decorate the Sanctuary for both the 9:00 a.m. and the 10:45 a.m. Intergenerational Easter Services. You may take your plant home after the second morning service on Sunday March 23rd!   We are also asking for plant dedications, in memory of or in celebration of a loved one.  Please contact Rosemary in the Church Office Click to email (781-944-0404) if you wish to order.

WHERE IS THE SUNDAY NEWS?

The office in concert with the Green Sanctuary Committee is now placing our weekly Sunday News in baskets or tables as you enter for worship.  Effective Sunday, March 16 the Sunday News will not be inserted in every order of service.  We are asking families to please help themselves to a copy of the Sunday News as they enter worship.   This small change will result in a paper reduction.

PLAYSCHOOL AND INFANT CARE MOVE TO COMMUNITY HALL

Starting March 16 the Playschool will be located in Community Hall which is in the Church building and directly beneath the Sanctuary. Jenn and Karyn will be there to greet and care for our youngest church folks! The fun and familiar toys will be brought over from Sawyer House. We have outgrown the rooms and the space in Sawyer House. The Community Hall location affords a bathroom on the same floor, enough room and space to move, play, and crawl around! It may also make it easier for parents to gently move between service and a longing baby or child.   Sunday morning Playschool has been moved from the first floor of the Sawyer Nursery building to the Community Hall space directly beneath the Sanctuary in the Church Building and we have two experienced and trained staff to care for our youngest church attendees; Jenn DeSantis and Karyn Carmichael.

MINISTER'S MESSAGE

Hi Everyone.  This week I’ve asked Eric Tuvell to write the Minister’s Column, using words that he spoke in church two weeks ago.  Eric is one of our amazing young adults in the church community.  Before I turn you over to Eric, let me remind you that we will celebrate a special Good Friday Evening Service on Friday, March 21 at 7:30 PM; and have TWO EASTER SERVICES on March 23rd at 9:00 AM and 10:45 AM (please note special times)  See you on the path, Tim.

Eric TuvellMy name is Eric Tuvell.  I have been going to this church since I was 4 years old.  I am now 18, and I am now able to help keep this church running by donating both time and money.  I am currently serving on the pledge committee for the church, and this year I will be increasing my pledge in order to give back to the church that I have grown up in.

I cannot honestly say that I enjoyed every minute of Sunday School growing up.  Looking back, however, I realize that my religious education was very useful, giving me information about not only Unitarian Universalism, but other religions as well.  In today’s world, this has helped me see both sides of debates, be they political, religious, class-based, or anything else.  I received such a wonderful religious education because of the generosity of the adults in this church, both with their time and their money.  The teachers who teach Sunday School are all volunteers.  If they had not decided to help teach the Religious Education program here at this church, I would not have received the education that I did.  Their donation of time keeps this church’s Sunday School program running.

Since finishing the Coming of Age Program here at this church, I have volunteered to teach Sunday School 2 times.  Time, however, is not the only thing necessary to keep the RE program running.  Without donations to the church, the Sunday School program would not exist.  For one thing, they would not have anywhere to meet.  They would also not be able to accomplish very much, because they would not have the necessary materials.

The Religious Education program is not the only thing that requires donations at this church.  If nobody donated anything (be it time, money, or something else), none of us would be here right now.  We wouldn’t have Reverend Tim, Aileen, or any of the other wonderful people who work here.  We also wouldn’t have a building to meet in, and any property we had would be a mess.  We wouldn’t be able to print programs, have services, send out newsletters, or have other groups or activities, such as brown-bag lunches or New UU classes.  If nobody donated anything to this church, we wouldn’t even be able to have the Kris Kringle fair.

In order to keep this church running, people must donate to it.  Anything is appreciated: time, supplies, money; anything.  No amount is too small.  Though I am not able to donate a large amount, I know that the money I am donating will help anyway.  Anybody can donate, no matter their age.  Children, teenagers, adults, and seniors can all give back to the church by donating time or money.  We need to keep this church running, “not only for us, but for anyone who comes here in the future.”  (Unsure of where quote came from).

Thanks,
Eric

Night at the Movies

Lorraine Dennis, President  “Manufactured Landscapes”

If you are interested in any of the following: art, the future of our planet, photography, economics, film, China’s industrial revolution, the environment, beauty, recycling;  in short, if you’re interested in our world, please join us to see the documentary “Manufactured Landscapes” on Friday April 11 here at the UUCR in Loring, Room 103.

An Extraordinary, Haunting, Beautiful, Insightful, Touching and Thought-Provoking Movie   -   Al Gore

An eloquent ecological warning that begs to be hung on the wall, studied, absorbed, and learned from.  “Manufactured Landscapes” is a mesmerizing work of visual oncology, a witness to a cancer that's visible only at a distance but entwined with the DNA of everything we buy and everywhere we shop.   -  Boston Globe

Manufactured Landscapes, using China as a canvas, is a reflection on the future of the planet, on the course of action we humans decide to take, and whether we are strong enough to do what is necessary to alter the path of destruction that seems to be our preferred choice so far ….  Eric Mahleb, Cinema Blogger

A landmark glimpse into China's modern-day industrial revolution becomes something more -- a profound, open-ended meditation on man's physical impact on his environment.  -  Variety

"… a highly unusual viewing experience that stimulates the senses and the conscience simultaneously."   -    Hollywood Reporter

Manufactured Landscapes bristles with profound images and ideas; its ability to provoke marks it as one of the most exciting films of the year.  -  Walter Chaw, FilmFreakCentral.net

THANK YOU TO CATALYST FOUNDATION DONORS

I would like to thank the congregation for their generous donations to the second offering, which totaled $1570, for Catalyst Foundation on February 9.  Your continued interest and generosity to children in Vietnam is very kind.  I hope to bring you more pictures to show how your money is used to improve the lives of the children.  Thank you again for making the work there possible.

HUNGER BANQUET THANKS

Thank you to the 80-some adults, youth, and children who cooked, served, read, lit the chalice and blessed the event, took part as guests, handled AV and sound equipment, and cleaned up at the Hunger Banquet on Sunday. Thank you to all whose observations, insights, questions, and acts of kindness shed light on our brief experience of the world’s inequalities. Thank you to all who collectively donated $201 toward the village bank that our church and the Melrose UU Church hope to found in Haiti. The members of the Social Action Committee are deeply grateful for the generosity of time and spirit that people poured into this event.  One person asked (in paraphrase), “Once we go home and have dinner, will this experience stay with us? Will we think about it more, and be moved to act in some way?” If you have thoughts about future social action events or advocacy around issues of hunger and poverty, please contact any member of the Social Action Committee (Ann Fisher, Denise Giangregorio, Anne Mark, Jen McAneny, Margaret Soli, Chris Thomas).  Our congregation-wide opportunity to donate to the village bank will be the Second Offering on April 13.

YOUTH ADULT COMMITTEE AND SENIOR HIGH YOUTH PROGRAM

Congratulations to the Senior High Youth Program for a wonderful Youth Service on Sunday March 2. The music, readings and sermon pieces were engaging, enjoyable and well done.

As the New Orleans trip is getting closer there will be a mandatory meeting for youth and their parents on Tuesday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall.

The trip will begin on Friday, April 18 and the youth will return Friday, April 25. We are still collecting donations for the Hope Haven School; a residential school for alternative education for youth needing social services. Contributing materials to this school is another way to help the homeless in this country. Without the support of the Hope Haven School these youth would be on the streets without support family lives or in jail. The school is run by Catholic Charities and the Principal is a Unitarian Universalist Minister.  See donations list at the end of the RE page.

The Youth Adult Committee is hosting a Field Day and BBQ for youth grades 6 – 12 on Sunday May 4 from 12 – 3 p.m.

COMING OF AGE SOCIAL JUSTICE TRIP

July 13 – July 19 the Coming of Age class will be on their social justice trip at the Farm Sanctuary in Glen Falls, NY which is in the Finger Lakes region of upstate NY., www.farmsanctuary.org. The class will be learning about the care and compassion necessary to care for animals and the cruelty and abuse that our farm animals often face, a topic which is not often discussed.

Please join us and enjoy a lovely dinner cooked and served by the church school students! The evening is always filled with great smells, warm company, great laughs and an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for our beautiful church community. We look forward to seeing you there!

PRINCIPLES IN ACTION PROGRAM

Our Fourth Quarter Teachers had an exciting and productive Ingathering on Saturday, March 8. The Principles in Action Program for this year looks wonderful!

Each year we spend one quarter learning, discussing, and putting into action our 7 Unitarian Universalist Principles as a multiage church school group. This year we will begin every Sunday in the Sanctuary and dismiss into Loring House for our program. Each Sunday’s activity is created by the fourth quarter teachers. This year’s Principle in Action Theme is Healthy Bodies – Healthy Minds. The students will be working on a Nike sneakers recycling project, Pennies for Peace, the Mountaineering Game and other great activities.

Bits and Pieces

Among Ourselves

Our thoughts and prayers are with Marsten Parker, whose Dad died March 5.  Cards and notes can be sent to 42 Winthrop Avenue, Reading, MA 01867.

“I want to thank the many, many people who sent cards after my father died. It is wonderful to have so much caring support. I would also like to send special thanks to Rev. Tim for his very kind and comforting pastoral care.”
- David Kay

COME SING WITH US!

The jUUnior choir of UUCR would like to invite you to sing with us at church on Sunday morning, April 13.    The children involved with jUUnior choir have learned a round called "This Pretty Planet."  We're going to sing it on April 13, and we'd love others to join us.  Don't worry  -- the round is short, easy, and beautiful.  The jUUnior choir kids will teach it to you.  They already know it!  Join us for this wonderful, intergenerational, musical experience!   This piece is for everyone -- young and old, teens, too!   All non- jUUnior choir children (young children) must bring a singing adult.
If you wish to sing with us,  We will have two rehearsals that you must attend:

  • Sunday, March 30, 12:00 - 12:30, down in the Old Community  Hall
  • Sunday, April 13, before church, in the sanctuary

ARLINGTON STREET CHURCH HOSTS “SOUL IS WATERPROOF” NEW ORLEANS BENEFIT

On Saturday, March 29th, starting at 4 p.m.,  Arlington Street Church is hosting Soul Is Waterproof, an evening of music to raise funds to continue the rebuilding process in New Orleans. For any inquiries or to volunteer please send an email to NewOrleans@ascBoston.org New Orleans has proven that Soul is Waterproof.   It is slowly emerging from the floodwaters to become vital again.   Although the buildings were destroyed, the city’s soul is intact!  But it is 2 ½ years since the storm, and New Orleans is far from being rebuilt.  They are in need of our help now more than ever.  Come on out for a wonderful evening and a great cause!
