“Ingathering Service—Annual Water Communion”
Rev. Tim Kutzmark

Join us for our annual all ages Ingathering Service, as we welcome each other back from summer.  Together, we’ll celebrate our being together again, and explore the nurturing nature of water and community in ritual, chant, and story.  If you gathered water from places you visited this summer (or from your own kitchen sink or back yard), please bring a few drops with you for our traditional mingling and blessing of the waters.  The water will be blessed during the service and used for Child Dedications and other rituals throughout the year (and we are going to have oodles of Child Dedications this year!).

Sunday, September 16th—10:30 AM

BRING A FRIEND SUNDAY
“Dreams of Others”
Rev. Tim Kutzmark, with special guest vocalist Michael Ricca

Rev. Tim received an unexpected email on July 5th that brought tears to his eyes and inspired this sermon.  Come here a story that might touch your heart and perhaps change the way you look at your dreams and the dreams of others.  Today’s service is “Bring A Friend Sunday.”  This special service is being created as a perfect service to introduce a friend or neighbor to our affirming and renewing Unitarian Universalist Faith.  Go on—invite a friend to join you.  We’ll also celebrate the Child Dedication of Arianna Adi Olivardia, daughter of Sharon and Roberto.  [Note: Come early before the service and enjoy our annual Children’s Religious Education breakfast]

Did you know that 85% of the people who ever visit a Unitarian Universalist Congregation do so because someone invited them to visit?  Don’t keep the warm and welcoming community here at the UU Church of Reading a secret.  Why not share our Unitarian Universalist faith with someone you know?  SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 16th is “BRING A FRIEND SUNDAY.”  Rev. Tim and the Worship Arts Ministry are creating a service perfect for first time visitors.  Please extend an invitation to someone you know.

Sunday, September 23rd—10:30 AM

“The Gospel According To My Backyard”
(including an after-church plant swap)
Rev. Tim Kutzmark

As Unitarian Universalists, we believe that revelation and the wisdom of the universe can speak to us in many ways and forms.  This summer, Rev. Tim spent countless hours outside working in the garden and fixing up his newly purchased house.  In the process, he was reminded of some practical and profound spiritual truths.  Come discover how a living scripture awaits just outside your back door.  To help decorate the sanctuary today, please bring some autumn flowers or other greenery (in a vase) from your own backyard or garden.  Also, if you have any perennials from your garden you would like to share or swap, please drop those off in Fellowship Hall prior to the service.  During Social Hour, we’ll have a chance to choose someone else’s growing things to add to your garden.  (Rev. Tim will be happy to take any unclaimed plants home to his own garden)

A Weekend of Celebration and Community – October 13 & 14

Save the dates!! On the weekend of October 13 and 14, UUCR will formally rededicate our new and renovated home, and we want everyone to participate.

On Saturday, October 13, we will hold an open house for our congregation and for the community.  The doors will open at 9:30 a.m.  At 10:00 Alex the Jester, an internationally-known performer, will give an exciting show for all ages in the Sanctuary. Following the show, we will have refreshments and activities for children, as well as tours of our facilities, throughout the morning.

The service on Sunday, October 14, will be a service of rededication, with special guests and music, and a theme of the Past, Present, and Future of UUCR.  Immediately following the worship service, a delicious luncheon will be held for everyone in our new Community Hall.

Lots of help will be needed.  If you’d like to participate – cooking, meeting visitors, ushering, entertaining children, setting up or cleaning up to name a few tasks – please contact Dru Wood-Beckwith at woodbeckwith@comcast.net or at 781-944-5030.  Thanks in advance!

MINISTER'S MESSAGE

Rev. Tim KutzmarkDear Friends:

As our new church year beings, I’ve been meditating on these luscious words by writer Alexander Theroux: “September: it was the most beautiful of words, he’s always felt, evoking orange-flowers, swallows, and regrets.”

What does this month of chilling temperatures and still glorious sun invoke and evoke for you?  As the pace of life seems to pick up from the sweet summer slumber of July and August, what are you looking forward to creating, doing, or becoming?  Even as the wheel of the year begins its inevitable turn towards the dark time of the year, what is longing to come alive within you and around you?  As the leaves begin to spark into brilliant color around us, I have to believe deeply that something is waiting to spark brilliantly and boldly in each of our lives.  Let us take time to look and listen and learn.

Speaking of sparks….we’re going to have a truly fun-filled and spirit-filled fall here at UUCR.  This Sunday, September 9, we begin with our all ages Annual Ingathering and Water Communion (don’t forget to bring a few drops of water from your summer travels, your backyard or your kitchen faucet).  The following Sunday, September 16th, we welcome back guest vocalist Michael Ricca and celebrate BRING A FRIEND SUNDAY (and do actually invite someone to join you—our UU faith is the world’s best kept secret).  On Sunday, September 23rd, we’re going to have a perennial plant swap after the Worship Service.  I’ve gone ga-ga for gardening this year, so I invite everyone to bring something from your garden to swap and share.

Alexander, King of JestersLastly, but most importantly, you must go to your calendar—yes, now, at this very moment—and circle in red Saturday, October 13 and Sunday, October 14th.  This is the weekend we’re going to Celebrate, Bless, and Re-Dedicate our expanded Sanctuary and church campus.  Saturday, October 13th will be a delightful Open House for us, and for our neighbors.  We’re inviting the town to join us to see and celebrate what we’ve built!  They’ll be food, fun, and a special performance from the internationally acclaimed “Alexander—King of Jesters.”  Alexander has appeared all over the world, in clubs, theaters, parks, and strange public places.  I have rarely laughed as long or as loud as when I’m watching “Alexander—King of Jesters.”  His is a unique act and performance for ALL AGES—so whether you are 4, 14, 24, 54, 84, or even 94, you truly don’t want to miss his irreverent antics.  As one critic said after his show in Singapore: “Alexander’s Appeal Knows No Boundaries.”  You won’t believe what he can do with his mouth and a glass of water.  The open house begins at 9:30, and the show starts promptly at 10:00 AM.  Invite as many friends and neighbors as you wish to join you at our community party.

On Sunday, at 10:30 AM, we’ll celebrate a special worship together as we Re-Dedicate and Bless the building.  Rev. Jane Rzepka (our beloved former minister of UUCR) will join Rev. Tim in the service, and we are going to have truly special music from the choir and the congregation.  Please plan to join us for both Saturday and Sunday morning.

See you on the path,

Tim

PS: Keep your eye on your mailbox this week.  I’m sending you a copy of the sermon I shared this past Sunday on Labor Day Weekend.  If I may be so bold, it has a few thoughts I truly want us all to share together and take to heart as our new church year begins.

CHALICE CIRCLE NEWS

Chalice CirlesIs summer really over? Not officially but we have begun to plan for the upcoming 3rd year for Chalice Circles.  There is a sense of anticipation and eagerness to get going. In preparing for this next round of Chalice Circles we will be postponing the start of the program until January '08. The registration will happen later this fall and the  Circle meetings will commence in January and span the calendar year.  The summer may be greeted as an intermission or groups can choose to continue meeting in July and August with support from the Chalice Circle Team. Then in September the Chalice Circles will resume and conclude in November. In years past the Chalice Circles have begun in mid fall and run through May. We are trying this new schedule out to see how it works. September is typically such a big start up time for so many projects, committees and events. This fall will be time for some team building and preparation for the Registration in November.  Stay interested and watch for news of this event in announcements and upcoming newsletters. Please contact Nora Buckley Click to email or the church office.

If you are shy, we'll assign you a choir buddy who will pick you up and stay by your side for the first few weeks of choir.  Please contact Sharyn Taitz

Green Sanctuary

Latest News

Green Sanctuary LogoGreen Sanctuary is kicking off this new year back home in our beautiful campus with a Paper Recycling Campaign.  We received frequent and passionate feedback about excessive paper usage and waste here at UUCR, so it made sense to implement this action from our Action Plan sooner rather than later.  See our complete action plan on our program page.   As every savvy recycler knows, a thorough recycling effort has 3 components: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.  Our plans for each component are listed below.  We always welcome additional ideas and involvement.

Reduce:

Complete Junk Mail Reduction Kits for each of the church addresses and make available at our coffee hour table for congregants to take home, look for ways to reduce the size of the order of service and newsletter.

Reuse:

Collect the order-of-service covers for reuse each week; provide a magazine swap bin at coffee hour.

Recycle:

Recycle paper used on campus, involve every member of the congregation in recycling efforts, use paper made from 100% post-consumer content recycled paper.

Being a member of a Green Sanctuary means living in a way that is environmentally sustainable and just.  Recycling paper fosters sustainability since it reduces the number of trees needed for paper production.  Taking turns recycling paper will foster environmental justice within our church community since every person who contributes to the waste paper will assist with its disposal.  Deposit your used paper in any of the green recycling bins in Loring or the Church building and sign up to be our weekly paper recycling person.  As is currently done with ushering, we are starting a weekly sign-up sheet for paper recycling.  Visit our coffee hour table to get a Junk Mail Reduction Kit for your home.  Bring along a magazine that you’ve read and drop it off in our Magazine Swap bin for someone else to read and pick up a magazine to bring home yourself.  We look forward to the year ahead and learning together what it means to be a Green Sanctuary.

Aileen's Corner

DRE Aileen Dashurova helping providing confetti to children to bless the new sanctuary

How are your dreams and ideas going for 2007? You have a few more months to create some changes, support your goals and have fun loving yourself as you do it all!

Back in January of 2007 the RE Committee hosted our annual Resolution Stars activity. Look over the list and see how you have been doing on yours. It is not too late to start, pick up where you may have left off, or revisit and fine tune your hopes for this year!

“I hope to gain Peace of Mind from Yoga”
“My resolution is to be a better basketball player.”
“My goal is to be more patient also to see my family far away”
“I want a baby sister”
“To improve my writing, cursive and typing”
“To take more deep breaths and connect”
“Break into area 51 and steal a mech” (DRE note: I am not too ‘area 51’ hip so it looks like you want to steal a mech, which may or may not be what you want to steal – good luck regardless of my interpretation!)
“Beat two PS2 Games!!”
“to get a bunny and to treat my pets better”
“I will finish my porch renovation project.”
“I hope I Will be a Karate Master.”
“To score more touchdowns in football”
“To have more fun”
“To get better grades in reading”
“I want to get better at gymnas”
“My New Year’s Rezalution is to plant flowers in the spring” (DRE note: in case you missed the spring, fall bulb planting is a BLAST and you can find awesome (1/2 price) plants that somehow were left behind this spring at nurseries that would be happy to join your home garden this fall!)
“Health Travel Retirement”
“To make the High Honor Role.”
“To eat more trash”
“I want my cat to live until her 20th birthday!”
“I had a birthday”
“My resolution is to be more patient.”
“try new foods”
“I hope that I can participate in Math more.”
“Stay Healthy – Travel, See family, Work week, get back to the gym, Partner up, Fix up the gardens.”
“I will be better at math.”
“Help Church Community settle into new bldg”
“1. be nicer to my husband 2. Have more fun”
“My new years resolution is to hit 3 homerunns in the majors.”
“Learn to let people love me”
“ I want to get a dog in 2007.”
“more flexible”
“to eat better foods like veggies and fruits not to lie”
“Im gonna have more partys”
“make a tredmil when you run on it it creats execticaty  don’t have time to explane.”
“I resolve to be more patient”
“To take more care of my pets”
“To Find My Center”
“To eat more cheese and to get better in math”
“I don’t care”
“I want to earn 2 more Karate belts”
“To Relax”
“My resolution is to become healthier + feel better + better!”
“I will eat four grapes a day.” (DRE note: even if you missed some days, you could double or triple up to catch up and do maybe 8 or 12 a day until it balances out!)
“ I would like to exercise more!”
“to get rid of Bush. Bush = monkey”
“To make High honer Roll”
“I will do a 360 off a ski jump”
“Help to reduce global warming” (DRE note: you may want to connect to the people making the tredmil and planting!)
“Exercise more Be more organized”
“I wot to clene my room”
“YOGA”
“To make High Honors In School.”
“I don’t have a resulution”
“Next year I want to be better at football and be better at math.”(DRE note: Now’s the time – it is “next year”.  YOU CAN DO IT! I believe in you!)
“Go on the cruse in the summer”
“Get better in Math”
“To laugh – hearty every day” (DRE note: the grapes trick can work for this one, too. So in case you didn’t laugh hearty everyday since Jan. 2007, you can laugh hearty many times a day from today until Dec. 31 2007 to catch up!)
“My reseloution is to eat more chese”
“My resolution is to learn much more”
“To make a resolution next year.”

It is exciting to read all of your resolutions! If they have happened, consider taking a moment to look at yourself in the mirror and be proud of what you accomplished! YAHOOO…YIPEEE…YOU DID IT! If you missed a day here or there, that is totally cool, too, because you are trying. Some people don’t know how great it is to hope, to have an idea, or to get excited about making something happen! What is really amazing is that you can ALWAYS pick up where you left off…you don’t have to “give up”! You can wake up each day and start the resolution again, even if you forgot it or some days it seemed too hard or you were too busy! You have months left to enjoy your resolution so have fun! Give it a try! BE PROUD of all that you have done whether it is completed, in between, stalled or just beginning! You are TERRIFIC!

And for your at home calendars (especially to support those resolutions of being more organized!):

If you'd like to submit a recipe, send it, along with a "cook's notes" (a sentence or two about the recipe's history or why it's wonderful or hints about its preparation). to Fran Sansalone Click to email, (781 944-2444)  or drop it off at the church office with your check for $20 (the price for participation - to cover production costs). UU NEW ENGLAND CONFERENCE PLANNED FOR OCTOBER 27

Unitarian Universalism is a tradition which depends upon the strength of its lay leadership to flourish. Our authority lies with our congregations and the ministries that they choose to live out in the world. At the same time, we call and hire professionals (Ministers, Religious Educators, Administrators and Musicians) to help lead and guide our communities. Ideally the relationship between our professionals and our lay leadership is complementary and mutually beneficial,
but sometimes, inevitably, tensions occur in figuring out who is truly responsible for what. This conference features our strongest and most prominent lay leader: Gini Courter, Moderator of the UUA, and the Rev. Rob Eller-Isaacs, President of the UU Ministers Association offering a keynote conversation about the complexities of this relationship.  There will also be key denominational leaders offering workshops addressing particular aspects of this relationship such as  orship, administration, support of professionals, faith development, stewardship and pastoral care.  Who should attend: All current and future congregation leaders: presidents, officers, trustees,  committee chairs, ministers, RE professionals, administrators, and all other staff people.  Join your Unitarian Universalist brothers and sisters from across the New England Region in  exploring this important topic.  The conference will be held on Saturday, October 27 from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm at the Beechwood Hotel in Worcester, MA.  The cost is $85 per person if registering before October 10.  $100 per person after October 10.  Get information about registration online by visiting the Mass Bay District site.   For post office mail, send your payment to Joy Blanchette, Registrar  UU District Office 10 Ferry Street #318
Concord, NH 03301.  For further information by phone call 1-603- 228-8704
